Be Like Water

The Power of Adaptability

Be like water, a phrase coined by the one and only Bruce Lee and heavily reiterated by our studio director Colm.

The full quote, “Be like water making its way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way around or through it. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves. Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend” was Bruce Lee’s version of being formless.  Not allowing himself to be trapped by one mindset, but instead be able to adapt to certain situations and grow and change to find the right solution.

Embracing Change

Being able to embrace change and adapt can be very daunting but doing so will inevitably strengthen the final outcomes. Adapting in the design field has to be a regular occurrence with the ever-changing software fields and the rotation of clients and team members, designers can prime themselves for success by allowing themselves to be flexible and open to changing paths even if the one they are on has been well travelled. Not doing so can actually be detrimental to the end result, leaving the project feeling incomplete or lacking substance.

The Ripple Philosophy

‘Be like water’ is one of the values at Ripple. Although it may be a very hard skill to master, it is perhaps the most valuable tool that Ripple has at its disposal.

To be able to stay calm and clear-headed under pressure and deliver creative, innovative solutions to our clients instead of settling for that ‘it’ll be fine’ attitude.
