The best buildings don't happen by accident. Entrances, corridors, stairs and signs are planned around the people using them. When architecture works, you barely notice it. You know where to go. Spaces connect. Everything flows.
A good website should feel exactly the same.
That's content architecture: organising your website so people can find what they need, understand what you do and move naturally towards the next useful piece of information.
For construction and manufacturing businesses, that's becoming increasingly important. Because your website isn't just being read by customers anymore. You've also got Google AND the AI to satisfy because B2B buyers are increasingly using both to decide which businesses deserve a closer look.
Search has changed
B2B buyers have always researched before making contact. AI has given them another way to do it.
Gartner's 2026 research found that B2B buyers used an average of seven information sources during a recent purchase, while 45% used generative AI, mainly to research products and suppliers.
Instead of searching for a company, buyers can now ask:
What's the best dry verge system for high-wind areas?
Which aluminium rainwater system suits a coastal project?
What standards should this product meet?
AI gathers information from across the web, connects it and presents an answer.
Google is changing too. Its latest guidance specifically addresses optimising for generative AI features including AI Overviews and AI Mode, while making clear that established SEO fundamentals and genuinely useful, original content still matter.
So SEO doesn't mean filling your website with robotic copy written for machines.
It means building useful information for people, structuring it properly and making it easy for machines to understand too.
When websites grow extensions
Most difficult websites weren't badly designed to begin with. They've been extended.
Think about a commercial building that's grown over 20 years: another office gets added, reception moves, a store becomes a meeting room, a corridor gets built to connect two departments.
Every extension makes sense at the time but, altogether, if you keep adding bits without reconsidering the whole structure and you can end up with a bit of a carbuncle: there are too many entrances, signs everywhere, nobody is quite sure how to get from A to B and the route between the two isn’t particularly pleasant.
Websites grow exactly the same way.
New products. New services. New case studies. Campaign landing pages. PDFs. Downloads. Another item squeezed into the navigation.
Eventually, somebody needs to ask:
If we were building this today, would we build it like this?
That's where content architecture starts.
Build around the customer
We've recently taken this approach with a large construction business whose website had grown alongside the company.
Before changing how it looked, we went back to the floorplan: What are visitors actually coming here to do? What do they need first? What belongs together? Where are we making them work unnecessarily hard?
One small but important change was reorganising the navigation around the customer rather than the company.
That can mean taking ‘About Us’ out of valuable primary navigation space.
Your history matters. But most new visitors aren't arriving desperate to read it.
They're asking:
Can you do what I need? Have you done it before? Can I trust you?
Answer those questions first.
Products and capabilities become easier to reach. Related information sits together. Navigation gets simpler. Dead ends disappear.
And on a phone, that matters even more. Someone standing on site shouldn't need six clicks, three menus and a 40-page PDF to find one specification.
Good architecture makes the right route obvious.
Content architecture is becoming knowledge architecture
Construction and manufacturing businesses have another advantage.
They're sitting on enormous amounts of knowledge.
Technical data. BIM objects. CAD details. Installation guides. Test results. Certifications. EPDs. DoPs. CPDs. Case studies. FAQs. Decades of engineering and project experience.
The best manufacturers make that expertise easy to use because it reduces risk.
· It helps architects specify.
· Contractors compare.
· Installers get things right.
· Buyers make decisions.
That's why we would say that content architecture is becoming knowledge architecture:
· Content architecture organises pages.
· Knowledge architecture organises expertise.
The opportunity isn't necessarily producing more content. The opportunity is connecting what you already know so customers, search engines and AI can find and understand it.
Make every product page work harder
This thinking is already shaping how we work with manufacturing clients.
Take a typical product page. Traditionally, its job was fairly simple: show the product, describe it, add a datasheet and provide a route to enquiry.
Today, it has a much bigger role.
Before contacting anyone, a specifier, contractor or buyer may want to know where the product should be used, what problem it solves, how it performs, which standards it meets, what works alongside it and whether there's evidence of it performing on a real project.
Increasingly, AI is asking many of the same questions on their behalf.
So we're working systematically through client product ranges and rebuilding pages around those real information needs. Often, the answers already exist - in technical documents, installation guides, case studies, sales knowledge or elsewhere on the website. The opportunity is to join the dots.
A product page stops being an isolated description and becomes a useful technical hub: connected to specifications, certification, installation guidance, compatible products, FAQs and relevant projects.
That's content architecture in action.
It makes products easier to understand, trust and specify. It strengthens the wider website. And because the information is clear, connected and useful to people, it also gives Google and AI much better material from which to understand - and potentially surface - the expertise behind the business.
Your website is bigger than your website
There's another reason to get this right: your website feeds almost everything else.
· Sales presentations draw from it.
· Social content links to it.
· Brochures should agree with it.
· Tender teams use it.
· Potential employees judge you through it.
· Journalists research you through it.
And now AI learns from it.
So your website isn't simply somewhere to send customers: It is – or should be - one of the clearest expressions of what your business knows, does and stands for.
Get that foundation right and the rest of your marketing becomes easier to build.
Build for people first
